How much filament does an AMS waste per color change?
Purge amounts are configurable in the slicer and depend on the color pair — going from dark to light needs more purging. Typical flush volumes run 10–30 g per change, with stubborn transitions (red to white, black to yellow) reaching 40+ g. Your slicer's preview shows the exact purge total for a sliced model.
Why do multi-color prints use so much filament?
Single-nozzle multi-color systems must purge the old color out of the melt zone on every change, and a layer with four colors can mean three changes on that layer alone. A print with hundreds of color changes can easily purge more filament than ends up in the model — 50%+ waste is common on complex multi-color prints.
How can I reduce purge waste?
Reduce color changes per layer (group colors vertically where possible), lower flush multipliers for similar color pairs, purge into infill or a sacrificial object instead of a prime tower, and sequence colors light-to-dark.
